With all the concern about Covid-19 and societies in lock-down, the fact that May 2020 is New Zealand Music Month could easily pass by everyone except the most ardent followers.
As a New Zealand musician and guitar composer - also especially due to the months of lock-down without viable options for live performances - I've chosen to create a virtual recital featuring several of my compositions.
What's special about the compositions? Well, as always that's open for debate. However, two of the pieces I chose to perform for the cameras are Tarakihi and Waitemata Reverie. Tarakihi (Song of the Cicada) is inspired by the strength and drama of the Maori haka. Without words and actions it can in no way be considered an actual haka but it attempts to capture the power and emotion of the ceremonial dance. Waitemata Reverie is all about the Auckland harbour with ships departing for overseas destinations while the white sandy beaches and sparkling waters are enjoyed by those left behind.
The video also includes Circle Dance - another piece of my own invention which is proving almost as popular as my most famous piece Finchdean - and Dream Weaving which has featured on a 2017 NAXOS album release.
